San Antonio, TX

Spanish missions, conquistadors, and Texas revolutionists are usually what come to mind when San Antonio is mentioned. San Antonio is that and so much more.

If you’re planning a family vacation, attractions like Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and the Alamo may top your destination list. If something more relaxing is on your mind, let me introduce you to the German side of San Antonio.

King William District

Just south of the San Antonio River Walk is the King William District. Read more about it’s history here.

You’ll find homes built by German immigrants after the Texas Revolution. The route from the River Walk to the King William District is a scenic walk along a non-commercialized part of the river. Map There is a paved hiking/biking trail the entire distance.

Prepare to see ducks, turtles, fish and birds as you step away from tourist crowds and enter a peaceful sanctuary that will take you back in history.

My personal favorite stop is the Guenther House. Once the home of Carl Guenther (founder of Pioneer Flour), it is now a restaurant, gift shop, and museum. Enjoy German pastries, breakfast, or lunch. Menu options range from soups and sandwiches to my personal favorite — Champagne Enchiladas.

Remember the Alamo

The Alamo, March

A trip to San Antonio would not be complete without a trip to the Alamo. The history of the Alamo began far before the Texas Revolution. Once a Spanish mission, the original grounds contained farms, cattle, and lodging. You can read more here.

Where to Stay

I love to stay on the River Walk (or within walking distance) when visiting San Antonio. On our most recent trip, we stayed at the Drury Plaza Hotel. The Drury offers a taste of 1940’s history in the lobby and basement. The basement level also offers river access.

The location used to be a bank — the vault is still there

If you’re traveling with kids you will be thrilled to know that The Drury has a free breakfast and dinner bar. The menu choices vary nightly and are always kid friendly (think nachos, hot dogs, and fettuccine).

This was our king suite. Through the window is a kitchenette, sofa & TV, and access to the balcony
The San Fernando Cathedral lit up with the history of San Antonio.

When we checked in, I asked if there were any upgrades they could offer us. I was interested in a view. We were given a room with a full balcony view of the San Fernando Cathedral. After all my visits to San Antonio, I discovered something new. The Cathedral plays a light show called The Saga — a 24 minute history of San Antonio. It was amazing.
